Across the ocean in North Brabant, the Netherlands, on Wednesday; January 10, 1912 Henrietta Antonia (Netten) Jellema Van Zee was born to the late Denis and Antonia Klootwyk Netten. A sister to seven older brothers at the time, she and her family immigrated to Sully; Jasper County, Iowa when she was six months of age. The family resided there for 7 ½ years and during this time, Etta, as she became known, gained two sisters, one of whom died in infancy. In 1920 the Netten family moved to Hawarden; Sioux County, Iowa and then to Hudson; Lincoln County, South Dakota where she attended country grade schools and the Lebanon Christian Reformed Church at Doon; Lyon County, Iowa where she made profession of her faith. It was at this church and "church doings' that she met Herman Jellema. Etta and Herman were married on Friday; February 9, 1934, in Pella; Marion County, Iowa, as her parents had moved to Pella during their courtship. Following their marriage the newlyweds returned to Doon. During the harsh "Dust Storms" of the early 1930's, they and their daughter, Arlene Gladys, moved to Towaco; Morris County, New Jersey. Herman owned and worked on dairy farms there for 9 ½ years during which time two sons were born: Marvin Dale and Richard. Following World War II, the family returned to Iowa, this time settling in Pella. In 1946, Etta and the family joined the First Christian Reformed Church of Pella and at this time their fourth child was born, Lawrence Herman. In addition to her domestic responsibilities, Etta worked outside of the home as a clerk at Penny's Department Store and Black's Style Shop. She later worked on the line at the Rolscreen Company in Pella for nine years. During this time Herman did long-distance truck hauling, traveling to as many as 39 states in a year. Herman drove truck for Vermeer Manufacturing Company until his death on Sunday; May 20, 1973, at the age of 63 years. On Thursday; October 9, 1975, Etta was united in marriage with William A.(Martin) Van Zee. They lived out their retirement years together traveling to the South for winters and with family and church activities. One would scarcely discern that this dear lady had experienced many a heartache and disappointment in her life. On Monday; (Christmas Eve) December 24, 1990, her son-in-law, Marvin F. Van Gorp, passed away at the age of 65 years; on Saturday; May 9, 1992 her son, Marvin D. Jellema, passed away of injuries received in a motorcycle accident at the age of 53 years; and in 1993, her son, Lawrence H. Jellema, passed away at the age of 46 years. Then on Wednesday; May 13, 1998, her husband, Bill Van Zee, passed away at the age of 93 years. With each death, Etta was brought closer to God. "The Lord always brings you through, and you get stronger each time." On Wednesday morning, January 17, 2007, Henrietta Antonia (Netten) Jellema Van Zee, 95, went home to be with her Lord while being cared for at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House. She had just celebrated her 95th birthday. Those left to mourn her passing are the following children and their families: Arlene G.(Van Gorp) and Jack Thomassen of Pella; Marion County, Iowa. (Marvin F.) and Marilyn (Visser) Jellema of Knoxville; Marion County, Iowa. Richard and Barbara ( Kooi ) Jellema of Naples; Collier County, Florida. Leroy A. and Ilda Lou (Mol) Van Zee of Pella, Iowa. Helen L. (Van Zee) and Marvin C. Smith of Oskaloosa; Mahaska County, Iowa. Joyce E. (Van Zee) and Raymond Vos of Pella, Iowa. Of her original family, Etta leaves her sister, Cornelia E. (Kay) Sawhill, of Indianola; Warren County, Iowa and a sister-in-law, Beulah (Harry) Netten of Pella. She was preceded in death by her husbands; two sons and a son-in-law; her parents; an infant sister; and all her brothers: Hendrik A.(Henry), Peter, Cornelis (Cornie), Denis Hendrik, Denis Hendrik, Adrianus J. and Harri A. (Harry) Netten. May they all rest in peace. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Friday; January 19, 2007 at Van Dyk - Duven Funeral Home. Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday; January 20, 2007 at First Christian Reformed Church. Following services, Mrs. Van Zee will be laid to rest at 1:00 p.m. in Oakwood Cemetery
