!BIOGRAPHY: (Geschichte der Deutschen in Syracuse und Onondaga County-Nebst Kurzen Biographien-von Beamten und Hervorragenden Buergern-Translation from German, Copyright 2008 Michelle Stone.)Henri Bitter, a longtime resident music teacher here, was born on the 15th of March 1844 in Paris. His parents came from Rheinhessen and brought him in 1859 to America. He spent his younger years in France and Germany, where he received his education. He distinguished himself especially in the French schools and attained the award of honors in the yearly exams in Paris. Once in America, he continued his studies and graduated from the [Syracuse] high school in 1865. A few years later he was employed there as a teacher himself, and taught there for over 4 years. Thereafter he decided to concentrate all of his energy on music instruction. As a student of Christoph Castelhun in Germany, and later of Kalliwoda and Carlo Bassini in New York, he was equipped to enter the difficult and exacting field of music instruction. During the last 34 years he has instructed no less than 800 students, one of whom, Mrs. Pauline Elsässer L’Allemand, later obtained magnificent success as a singer. He is a veteran conductor of singing societies, having led at various times each of the Syracuse groups, including the "Liederkranz" alone for 18 years, "Concordia" for 20, and the "Sängerbund" for over 5 years. Currently he leads the "Workers Liedertafel," the "Harugari Liedertafel" (in his 10th year), "Concordia," and the "Arion Quartett Club." He also enjoys a good reputation as an organist and is now employed (in his 12th year) [as organist] at St. Peter's Church. In addition he offers instruction in the French, German, and English languages.
