He emigrated to this country early in the fifties, settling first in Chicago. Coming to this state, he was a resident of Houston county for a while but soon moved her, buying the farm which is now mostly occupied by South Rushford. In 1855 he was married to the widow of Gilbert Amundson. [sic] About 1865 he sold his farm to a Mr. Hayes, and purchased the one west of our city, now owned by A. Vaagen. In 1883 he purchased a hardware store in Rushford and conducted this business successfully until he sold out to his two sons, Henry and Martin. Since that time he has led a quiet life. A few years ago his health began to fail, the past winter being unusually hard on him, and his death was not unexpected. He leaves four living children, Anton, of Clifford, N.D.; Henry, of Valley City; Martin, of Minneapolis; and Sophie, now Mrs. Ed. Bakken, of our city. The funeral occurred Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Lutheran church, Rev. Jaastad conducting the services, and he was buried beside his wife, who died only a month ago. Deceased was one of our earliest pioneers and, since becoming a resident of our city, has done much toward its advancement. He was trusted and respected by everyone. The children have the sympathy of all in their loss." References
