Helen Tokarz Wardwell, 78, passed away Monday, (March 3, 2003) at the Fairview Manor in Groton after a long illness. Helen was the wife of Edwin R. Wardwell, Jr. to whom she was married for 55 years. She was born in Enfield on April 23, 1924, and graduated from Hartford High School, 1942. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her four children, Leslie Fleury of North Stonington, Edwin Wardwell of Suffield, Bruce Wardwell of Wethersfield, Eileen Wilson of Niantic; a brother, John Tokarz of Farmington; 11 grandchildren; and a great grandchild. Helen lived in Enfield, for many years before moving to Mystic. She was employed at Spaulding Gardens florist in Enfield before becoming an administrator for the Travelers Insurance Company. She loved reading, spending time at the beach, and knitting afghans and braided rugs. The funeral will assemble at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m., in St. Agnes Church, Haigh Ave., Niantic. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Fellowship Manor Recreation Fund, 235 Lestertown Rd., Groton; or to the VNA of Southeastern Connecticut, 403 North Frontage Rd., Waterford, CT 06385. -Hartford Courant 05 March 2003
