AB Yale 1861, AM Yale 1871. He enlisted as private in the "First Defenders" on Apr. 16, 19=861, the first troop in the Civil War to enter Washington. Later he served as captain of the Seventh PA Cavalry. He was President of the Board of Trustees of the State Hospital for Injured at Ashland, PA, and president of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. He was a member of the PA State "Coal Waste Commission". See "Who's Who in American," Vol. I, 1910-1911. It was he who co-operated with his first cousin Theodore Samuel Thompson (#338) in the preparation of the "Thompson Family" booklet upon which the present family records have been based. He married on Jan. 23, 1866, at Pottsville, PA, Sara Eliza Beck (born Jan. 16, 1840, at Pottsville, PA), daughter of Isaac and Margaretta (Pitman) Beck, and granddaughter of Joseph and Eleanor (Copeland) Beck, and of Ephraim and Mary (Patterson) Pitman. Address, Pottsville, PA. Issue (1) Emily Baird, (2) Samuel Clifton, (3) Margaretta, (4) Eleanor, (5) Heber Harris." 2007-I visited the US Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle, PA and found several references for Heber Samuel Thompson: The First Defenders which he wrote in 1910. This book contained pictures of Heber and Charles E Beck. There was also a typescript of his diary from 30 Apr 1864 - 29 Jun 1864; and a letter to his mother written from Charleston, SC, prisoners' hospital. The typescript was given to James F Haas by Margaret Toussaint. I don't know if this small time span is all that Heber wrote or if there is more diary somewhere. References
