Obituary

Hamilton Advocate-Hamiltonian, Hamilton, Missouri June 9, 1960 Harriette E. Orr Harriette E. Orr, daughter of John T. and Alice O. Esteb, was born Jan. 24, 1873, at the Locust Grove farm, west of Kingston, and died at the family home in Polo May 22, 1960, at the age of 87 years, 4 months and 22 days after an affliction of ten years and five months. She had been cared for by the daughter, Prudence, of the home and the other children came often and assisted. She grew to young womanhood in the Kingston community and on August 19, 1891, was united in marriage to Charles C. Orr, who preceded her in death on March 18, 1942. To this union five children were born. Earl C. Orr of the home, Mrs. Alice Jones, Gilman City, Miss Prudence Orr and Harold B. Orr of North Kansas City. When young she united with the Christian Church at Kingston and when the church at Polo was organized and built she became a charter member and for years taught the young people's Sunday school class. During her affliction she spent much time reading her Bible through 14 times and the remainder with her crocheting. Friends, relatives and even strangers have been recipients of her hand work. She made all her own funeral arrangements which were carried out as far as was possible. She is survived by the five children named; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Stiles, Lake Odessa, Mich. and Mrs. Edith Jones, Independence; one brother, Tom Esteb, Kingston; one grandson Leroy Orr, North Kansas City; one great-granddaughter, Pamela Orr; one step-granddaughter, Mrs. Virginia Shanks, Tulsa, Okla.; and two step-great-grandchildren, Timmy and Connie Shanks of Tulsa, Okla. The funeral service was held Tuesday afternoon, May 24, at 2:30 at the Christian Church in Polo by Rev. C.C. Donaghue, pastor of the Christian Union Church at Prairie Ridge under the direction of the Alspaugh and Cowley mortuary. Music was two solos by Mrs. John McCollough, "Beyond the Sunset" and "Someday We'll Understand", with Sylvia Fowler at the piano. Pallbearers were Walter Groves, Joe Bennett, Ellis Wormsley, Mike Fowler, Floyd Esteb and Forrest Leamer. Interment was in the family lot at the Kingston cemetery.
