Facts and Events
Harriet (Timbrook) Grate (Auburn Paper) Universal sorrow has been caused to a host of DeKalb county people as a consequence of the death of Mrs. Harriet Grate, occurring at the home of her son, John H. Grate, on North Seventh street. The deceased was the victim of a stroke of paralysis in July of this year and since then her health has gradually declined, a second stroke occurring four weeks ago, rendering her condition beyond medical aid. It was generally known that death could not be averted and the women who had passed her eighty-third milestone patiently awaited the call of the grim reaper. The decedent was born in Virginia and when young womanhood she came to DeKalb county, where she has continuously resided since. She was a woman possessed of lofty ideals and her life has been an inspiration to many. She rejoiced in devoting herself to the pleasures of domesticity and within her sphere her kind deeds have found expression among all with whom she came in contact. Mrs. Grate's husband has preceded her to the great beyond, his death having occurred in 1876. Surviving to mourn their loss, besides a multitude of sorrowing friends, are two sons, John H. of Auburn, and Sylvester of Kendallville; a sister, Mrs. Rebecca Boger of Spencerville, and a brother, James Timbrook, of DeKalb county. The funeral services will be held at Sedan Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the cortege leaving the home at 12 o'clock. Interment will be made at Cedar Lake cemetery. Ray C. Dilgard will be the undertaker in charge. References
