Facts and Events
Alice was quiet and easy to get along with. She sort of "went along" with things. After Emmet died, the store in Gem was sold and Alice and her daughter Stella moved to Norton, Kansas, for a while and then returned to Gem. They went to live with her other daughter Bessie, and Bessie's husband Monroe Cook. They eventually moved out and rented a place in Rexford, Kansas. After that, they moved back to the farm in Menlo, Kansas and lived in the farm house. Edith and Harvey took them around. Edith thought it made things crowded. While they were on the farm, they wanted to make a garden. Alvin and Marion Bastin (Harvey's sons) burned the weeds out of the garden. The wind came up, and the fire spread surrounding the windmill and moving towards the house. But before the house caught fire, the wind changed and the fire changed direction. Stella fought the fire by carrying buckets of water, and Marion and Alvin fought it with a wet sack. When Harvey and Edith returned, they saw the yard had been burned. From the farm, Alice and Stella moved to Colby, Kansas. Gladith and Harvey moved them. Stella had a lot of old hats left from the store, and also a lot of old books to be moved.
