Facts and Events
HARRIET MARIA BEEBE As told by Eliza L. Gardner The wife of Fay Gardner Who was the 12th child of Harriet Maria Beebe & George Bryant Gardner Harriet Maria Beebe, the 3rd wife of George Bryant Gardner, was born 21 February 1836 at Yates, New York. Her father was William Albert Beebe and her mother was Louisa Newton. She came to Salt Lake City in Brigham Young's Company, when a small girl. She often told about the trip and how she had scraped the mush kettle for President Young's supper. She traveled with the Widow Green and she experienced all the hardships of the other pioneers. As she grew to womanhood, she taught school in the homes of the saints and helped raise the children of the communities where she lived. Harriet was persuaded by her father to marry George Bryant Gardner, as a sure way to salvation. She was not happy about it in her young days but she stayed with it and lived a useful life. She was the mother of 13 children. She was set apart as a midwife by President Brigham Young and he told her she would have success as long as she trusted in her Heavenly Father and she surely did. She would tell me to pray for her every time she left to care for the sick. She went every time that she was sent for, no matter whom or where, and God bless her, she never had a mother die under her hands. She delivered three children for me; Joseph was the 400th baby that she brought into the world. In her later years, she lived with us in the old home for three years, then went to Eureka, Utah, and lived with her son Will for seven years, then returned to Woodruff and lived with us another two years. She died on the 11th of August 1913 in our home in Woodruff, Arizona. She lived a wonderful life, always ready to serve her fellowman, always pleasant, with never a thought for herself. I think that I am the oldest one left of the family that knew her so well, and I loved her as my own Mother. Eliza Lewis Gardner
George Bryant Gardner and Wife, Harriet M. Beebe moved to Woodruff, AZ in 1883. Almost as soon as George and his family arrived in Woodruff, he was called to be chorister of the ward. His fine musical talent was sorely needed and he served as Ward Chorister for 14 years, giving much time to the development and enjoyment of good music. He was a good wheelright and blacksmith as well. His blacksmith shop was one of the first to be built in Woodruff. Harriet was a woman of great capabilities. She was a mother to a large family, the first Woodruff Primary President, a good neighbor and served as a nurse for many years. She had a pleasant disposition and always had a yard of beautiful flowers References
