Facts and Events
Note from Patricia Prickett Hickin: "Not yet ten years old when his father died, Harold grew up in Rural Retreat and went off to the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, VA, where he worked his way through college, by any honorable means he could find, among them spending long hours plucking chickens in the College's kitchen. He left after finishing all his accounting courses but before obtaining a degree. While still a student, he talked the college president into accepting his younger sister Gladys as a student despite her lack of financial means. He drew quite well and I believe even considered becoming a professional cartoonist. Soon after leaving college he joined his uncle Minter Jackson Prickett in Bluefield, Mercer County, WV, and worked for him briefly in the insurance business. He soon joined a local Bluefield firm and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming Treasurer of the company. He enjoyed public speaking, took a toastmaster's course, and became a popular speaker for civic organizations." References
