Questionable Information Found
This information comes from the Stearns genealogy. Barbour reports the birth as Samuel and the month as May. No further information on either has been found.
Note: I have tried to resolve this. Tolland VRs are not online, but filmed, film 1376026. These are not available to rent but was in the permanent collection of an FHC some distance away. Unfortunately, the digital scanner was not working and the old scanner had a broken belt and a sub-par lamp. This film has reverse images, and the writing is of varying darknesses, has seaped into the paper (spread out), and much of it is simply unreadable. So everything was working against getting an answer I could be confident in. The two Hony records misread by Barbour are two of the clearer records, and yet, one can justify his reading of Hannah Sterns dau. as Samuel Hony son, the image was that bad! Note also, p. 1:36 as cited by Barbour, was the page I was viewing, but it indicates that it was taken from page 21, so is itself a copy, not the original. It is unknown what version Van Wagenen was looking at. Given all that, it appears Barbour is wrong. It appears the given name is "hannah", lower case h; the surname is Sterns with a f-shaped 's' at the end that could be mistaken for a y, plus St vs H is a common switch (e.g., many Stow/How records have this problem); and only the first letter of son/dau determines how you read the rest (since a like o, u like n), and the first letter has a small stem so is not obvious. In agreement with Barbour I read the month as May. In all, I thought the record said, "hannah Sterns my dau was born 1718 about seven at night [11?] of may", but I have little confidence in this. It may be possible that a scanner with some digital image enhancement could clarify this, but otherwise, it may take somebody on the other coast to try and view the original in situ. --Jrich 20:54, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
