Williams, naming her grandfather James Harrington of Auburn, Oakland co., MI, with whom she resided until her marriage. From 1829 to 1840 she and her husband resided Saginaw City, moving for a while to Detroit and Pontiac, before settling at Flint, where for many years she suffered as an invalid before her death. Both the Saginaw Courier & Saginaw Enterprise carried laudatory obituaries. A Flint newspaper stated she suffered from mercury poisoning due to its use in a medication used to treat her 30 years before her death

9. ↑ Mr. Williams married, March 13, 1825, Miss Hannah M. Gotee, daughter of Elias and Martha G. (Harrington) Gotee. Her grandfather served with General Washington through the Revolution. Mrs. Williams shared with her husband the cares, privations, and final success of his active and eventful life, for forty-nine years. She died February 12, 1874, leaving five children.

    Died in this city, on the 12th of February inst., (1874) in peaceful hope of[p.206] a blessed resurrection, Mrs. Hannah M. Williams, wife of Hon. Ephraim S. Williams, of this city. Mrs. Williams was born at Aurelius, N.Y., June 5, 1809, and came to Michigan on the first trip of the steamer Superior, in May, 1822. She resided with her grandfather, James Harrington, near Auburn, Oakland county, until her marriage, March 13, 1825. In the fall of 1824 Mrs. Williams was one of a party of young friends, among whom was Mr. E. S. Williams, to whom she was afterwards married, who rode on horseback to Grand Blanc on a visit to Mrs. Rufus W. Stevens, a sister of Mr. Williams, thence from Grand Blanc to the present city of Flint. The company followed an Indian trail, then the only road of travel; crossed the river on the then rapids and where now is the mill dam, and standing upon the north bank viewed the beautiful spot for the future city of Flint, where she, after an eventful life, lived many years and died. After her marriage Mrs. Williams and family resided in Saginaw City from the fall of 1829 to the spring of 1840; then after a few years passed in Detroit and Pontiac, made their home in Flint. At an early age she made a profession of faith in Christ, and for over thirty five years has been a worthy and honored member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Her life, passed for the most part in continued bodily suffering, has furnished the highest testimony of the power of divine grace to impart steadfast patience, cheerful submission, and continued joy of spirit in the midst of the sorest trials and affliction. On the day before her death, with her mental faculties unimpaired, and with that wonderful self forgetfulness and care for others which characterized her whole life, she talked with her husband, with Mrs. R. W. Jenny, her only sister, and now the only surviving member of a large family, held a long conversation with the physician who had attended her for eighteen or twenty years, thanking him for his kind attention and expressed her perfect satisfaction with his treatment, gathered her children at her bedside and then directed messages for each of the absent ones. Of seven children given her five vet live; these with her husband, eighteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren mourn the loss of a most devoted and affectionate wife and mother. Their loss is her eternal gain. Fully matured by discipline and grace, she was eminently ripe for heaven, and on Thursday morning at 5 o'clock with a sweet and peaceful smile as if angels whispered rest, blessed rest, she laid one hand across her breast, tire other held by her husband and with her eyes fixed upon her husband and a beautiful smile, yielded her[p.207] spirit to God and passed from earth to heaven. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord !" Speaking upon the death of Mrs. Williams, the Saginaw Enterprise says: "Death of Mrs. E. S. Williams. We are pained to hear of the death of this excellent lady at Flint, who expired on Thursday morning the 12th inst. "The early settlers of the valley of the Saginaw will ever remember her with feelings of the highest respect and tender regard. She was the estimable wife of E. S. Williams, brother of the late Gardner D. Williams, of Saginaw City, and of B. O. & A. L. Williams, of Owosso.
