Hannah Elliott’s mother died when she was very small – her father remarried and the stepmother was so cruel to the child that she was placed with other people. She married when she was 16 saying, “I’m tired of living everywhere.” She had no chance to go to school and learned to read and write after she had two childen in school – the teacher boarding with them and helping her. She was a Baptist and I (Ida Clement Wolcott, a grand-daughter) can remember waking up in the morning and she was either reading her Bible (this Bible went to John Mark Van Aken and later his son, Harrison) or else she was praying with her Bible on the chair in front of her.
