from a member 2017:
In 1850, he was a spinner living in Lower Merion Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, but in 1860 was a farm laborer living in Township 17, Champaign County, Illinois. It is clear that by no later than August 1862 he had returned to Pennsylvania and is in the 1863 draft registration living in Centre Township, Perry County. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Perry County August 5, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 as a private with Co. G, 133rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 26, 1863. His first name is spelled "Handford" in the company register. He married Ellen McBride but no children were found. By 1873, he was living in Altoona, Blair County, where he was a member of Potts Post No. 62, G.A.R., and where his obituaries misspell his first name "Handford."
