In Memoriam. Hampton Burris Magee died suddenly at his summer residence at Biloxi, Miss., the early morning of Wednesday, July 15th, at the age of 71 years, one month and 19 days. Although he had passed the age of biblical allotment to man, of three score and ten years, yet his loved ones and friends hoped that rest and recuperative atmosphere of the seashore might restore his failing strenth, but he was called to a home in the beautiful city just as we were hopeful that his earthly career would be extended. His body was brought to Franklinton where simple and impressive funeral services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. C. C. Miller, assisted by Rev. F. N. Sweeney, Rev. H. E. Pettus and Rev. C. C. Morris. Interment was in Ellis Cemetery.
Hampton Burris Magee was born May 26, 1854 on his father's farm, four miles northwest of Franklinton on the banks of the beautiful Hay's Creek---just across the creek from the present location of Peter Pan Lodge. Here he past his happy boyhood, and when reaching manhood, moved to West Feliciana parish to take charge of a plantation owned by his father. Shortly after establishing his residence at this place he visited his old home and claimed as his bride, Miss Jennie Burris to whom he was marriage about February 1885.
After a residence of about five years in West Feliciana parish, he returned with his wife to Washington Parish, locating on a farm on the west side of Bogue Chitto River about five miles from Franklinton. On December 4, 1891 he and his wife were received by certificate as members of Centenary Methodist Episcopal Church, South, at Franklinton. About the year 1894[?] he moved to Franklinton going into a mercantile business from which he retired several years later having a competency. His first wife with whom he had lived happily died, November 12, [illeg]. On October 20, 1915, he was remarried to Mrs. Lillie Howard Magee, who survives him. His second wife was a second blessing, who by her loving, tender care no doubt lengthened his days and made him happy to the end of his life. He is survived by three brothers, Willis D. Magee, Marcus F. Magee and Albert G. Magee all residing in neighboring communities.
