Notes for GUSTAV SCHRETZMANN: Baptized on Jun 1 1872; Godfather was Gustav Eirich. His father, Andreas, was a brewer (bierbrauer) (#41 for 1872, p357).

Son Joe says his father emigrated to USA in about 1887 ("age 15 and with $20 in my pocket", Joe quoted him). Became naturalized citizen on March 8, 1906.

Germans to America indicates that Gustav arrived (New York?) on Oct 4, 1888 aboard the Rhynland which had sailed from Antwerp, Netherlands. The index entry indicates that he was 16, his occupation was "boy" and his destination was Chicago [Manifest #40691].

Gustav was a brewmaster. Worked in breweries in Newark, Milwaukee, and then San Francisco in 1906. Earthquake destroyed the brewery. He worked for a time in a monastery, then returned to Irvington, NJ where he acquired and ran three three-story apartments. Also had a tavern (the Lyons' Den) in the ground floor of one (160 Union Avenue); family lived on the 2nd floor. Moved, with Caroline and Joe, to Coral Gables in 1940 due to arthritis, per recollections of his son, Joe. - CFS

Tavern floor has tile inlays - green swastikas. This was symbol of the German Bunds. - Robert Switek

1920 Census [Jan 21 1920](ED 63, Sheet 19, Line 69, FHC #1821030) lists Gustav as 39 [sic]; says he is a saloonkeeper. Indicates that his wife, Marie (55) was born in Germany; daughter Julia (15) was born in NJ.

Marriage Certificate from St. Leo's indicates that witnesses were George Lettenmeier and Mary Schretzmann. Reverse side says Gustav was baptized on Jun 9, 1872 [sic] in St. Alphonse Church in Baden, Germany.

Gustav and Caroline are buried in Clinton Cemetery (Section 5, Lot 58), Irvington, NJ. Gustav was interred on May 3, 1961; age 89. Caroline was interred on Nov 14, 1956; age 68.
