Rose Bei, Deutsch Krone, West Prussia is now known as Roza Wielka, Poland and is located at 53 11 North latitude and 16° 29' East longitde. Gustav's brother Ernst birthplace is listed as Gerzlow (now Jaroslawsko, Poland) and is about 45 miles west-southwest of Rose. According to his obituary, Gustav took part in the 1866 Austro-Prussian War, a short war that wrestled control from Austria and left Prussia dominant over the northern German states. A few years later Gustav participated in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870, this time between France and Prussia for European dominance. This war resulted in the downfall of France and the emergence of a dominant German Empire.
