Granville studied law, and in 1841 was elected to the legislature of Tennessee, and later to the state Senate. In 1842 he was married to Martha Louise Barrow of Nashville, and in 1947 they moved to Jackson, and then to Nashville in 1852, where he was associated with the Nashville American. In 1855 he was elected Treasurer of Tennessee, and in 1881 became president of the Bank of Tennessee. "Colonel" Torbett was highly regarded by his constituents and relatives. He was responsible for organizing the 1st Tennessee Regiment for the Mexican War, where he functioned as Colonel.

Colonel Torbett and family were members of the First Baptist Church in Nashville. Granville is buried in a private vault in the Mount Olive Cemetery.
