acc to childhood neighbor: He (Charley) stayed with family on their farm when he was about 8 or 9 years old, because his mother was a nurse and had to go to Maryland because of a typhoid fever epidemic. He would trade clothes with Grace and then get into mischief on the outskirts of the farm while wearing them. Martin & Susan would think Grace the troublemaker and punish her. Charley and/or Grace would put chickens in the rainbarrel to see if they could swim.
