OTTER, Dena - A memorial service for Dena Otter, a longtime Lynden resident, was held on Friday, Dec. 30, at Third Christian Reformed Church at 2 p.m. with Rev. Gerrit W. Sheeres officiating. Burial preceded at Monumenta Cemetery. Mrs. Otter passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 27, 1988, at the Christian Rest Home at the age of 101. She was born in the Netherlands on Oct. 4, 1887, to Johan and Wilhelmina Van Mersbergen. She came from Holland to Nebraska at the age of 3 and then to Lynden. On April 13, 1911, she married Ulke John Otter, who preceded her in death in 1954. Mrs. Otter was a homemaker and, until moving to the Christian Rest Home in 1980, she resided at 708 Grover Street. She was a charter member of the Third Christian Reformed Church. She is survived by two daughters, Dorothy Otter of Lynden and Gertrude Vanderwall and her husband Marion of Grangeville, Idaho; a son, John and wife Jennie of Lynden; two sisters, Minnie Bylsma and Tena Haak of Lynden; two brothers, John Van Mersbergen and Gerrit Van Mersbergen of Lynden; 14 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and numerous other relatives. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mina Polinder, in 1982 and two brothers and three sisters. The family suggests contributions to Lynden Christian School, 515 Drayton St., Lynden, WA 98264. Mrs. John Otter had the misfortune a few days ago as she was running to the mail box, to fall and break one or two of the bones of her left hand. As a consequence John has had two or three very strenuous days making bread and taking care of the baby. However, the tension is much relieved, as Mrs. Otter's broken bones are knitting and her sister is assisting with the housework.
