Gordon served in Company I, 26th Regiment with his two brothers, Nathan and Daniel, but both brothers died. The company was known as the Caldwell Guards as part of an effort to raise and organize a legion for Zeb Vance, then Governor of NC. The effort was unsuccessful and later that year, the three brothers were transferred to Company H, 58th Regiment. The 1870 census indicate that Nathan’s wife, Bertie and her children lived next door to Daniel’s wife, Jemima and her children in Lenoir.

    Stone says 1812, but that is inconsistent with every other contemporary record (except the 1910 census), and makes him 106 at death. 1825 is consistent with earlier records.
