For much of his working life, Dad worked construction. Mom still remembers the day Dad came home and told her...in the course of their hi honey how was your day conversation ..that his boss was none too pleased with him because somehow Dad had rolled the grader. While Dad got out without a scratch...he just sort of jumped to whatever end of the grader that was pointing down at the time....the grader was not quite so lucky. For about 15 years he drove truck for Atwood Pet food. Mom still has pictures of Dad going out with a shovel trying to find the truck after a freak snowstorm in April...All that was visible was about a foot of aerial...the rest of it was buried. Dad had some sort of ...unusual.... hobbies. Probably the most notable was the time he went to a sale and came home with a John Deere tractor...which he set about restoring. In 1975....which was the year a lot of centennial celebrations occurred in Huron and Perth Counties, Dad used the tractor to haul the floats that Maitland Valley enrolled in the many parades that occurred that year. Later, Dad donated the John Deere to Maitland Valley and since then,John Deere has taken up residence at Wawanosh Nature Centre. Dad has now taken up collecting smaller tractors which he has displayed in display cabinets. Mom keeps saying that there is no more room for any more tractors but I would not be too surprised to find out that Dad "adopts" another display case...I found some information on new tractors in the van the other day. I think Dad was going shopping.... One of Dad's favorite meals was liver and onions...and Mom still recalls the night that, in the course of cooking Dad's favourite meal, they heard a huge crash outside and went to investigate. When they were outside, Mom realised to her horror that the train had struck a car and that it was Dad's! I'm not sure what lucky star Dad was born under but he managed to get out of the car...after it had been pushed by a train for fifty feet...with no major injuries. The liver and onion dinner was not so lucky...Mom said it tasted like shoe leather ..it had been cooking for about four hours by the time they got back from getting Dad checked out at Emerg. Dad was not quite so lucky the day he went...um..bungee jumping off Kate and Clint's roof. I don't think anyone had told Dad that bungee jumping is actually a whole safer if you use a rope but I think it would have been a whole lot less painful... Dad was over at Kate and Clint Honeyford's..friends of our family...and was using a ladder to do some work. The ladder slipped, and Dad fell about 8 feet onto the pavement.

Mom still laughs about how she found out....It seems that they called an ambulance to get Dad to the hospital...and then tried to call Mom at work. Mom and a coworker had been attending a conference in Kitchener and were unable to be reached. On the way back to the office,Mom stopped in at a local grocery store to pick up supplies for the office.A neighbour of Kate's(who had seen Dad get loaded into the ambulance) stopped her and asked how Glen was doing.Mom said ..fine..to which the neighbour lady said Gees..he must be made of rubber to not be hurt after the fall he took. Mom says that's when she had a suspicion that all was not well....Her intuition was confirmed when she looked at the package ...that had a note attached saying Marlene: URGENT...Call the office! Mom did and since the grocery store was only about a block and a half from the hospital, Mom decided to send Maitland Valley's vehicle home with the coworker and walked over to see Dad. Aside from a very sore hip...(that took almost a year to heal) and some broken glasses, Dad was ok. Mom says that that was the one day she really appreciated living in a small town. She managed to check on Dad, get Dad's glasses in for repairs, check on Kate and Clint and let them know how Dad was doing...and be home in time to get supper ready...All in the space of a 15 or 20 minute walk....oh and by the way... Dad has sworn to give up perilous ladder climbing.
