Personal History

Gilbert Claud Hamilton[2] was born 21 April 1879[1] (registered in the district of St. George Hanover Square, co. London).[2]

Gilbert entered Harrow School in 1892 and left in 1896.[16]

Gilbert joined the Grenadier Guards in 1899[1] and was promoted from supernumerary lieutenant to be lieutenant in 1901.[6] He was seconded for service with the South African Constabulary in 1900[7] and with the Macedonian Gendarmerie in 1904.[8] He was promoted to be (supernumerary) captain in 1905,[9] captain in 1906,[10] and adjutant the same year.[11] In 1910, Gilbert was seconded for service on the Staff (until 1913)[12] and soon after became aide-de-camp to the Rt. Hon. Lord Islington, Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Dominion of New Zealand.[13] Gilbert was promoted to major in 1914.[14]

On 1 January 1919,[15] Gilbert was appointed to be a Companion of the Most Distinguished Order of Saint Michael and Saint George (CMG), for services rendered in connection with military operations in France and Flanders.

In 1925, Gilbert was one of three executors of his father's will.

Death and Probate

Gilbert, then of Artillery Mansions in Westminster, co. London, died 31 March 1943[4][5] at Rockingham Castle, near the village of Rockingham, co. Northampton[4] (registered in the district of Kettering).[3]

On 2 September 1943,[4] in Llandudno, administration was granted to solicitors William Alan Gillett and Reginald Stapylton Cockburn. Effects were in the amount of £32,617 0s 2d.
