DO NOT CONFUSE with this registration district in Westminster with St. George in the East Registration District which covered an area to the east of the City of London and was absorbed into Stepney Registration District in 1926.

St. George Hanover Square Registration District originally covered the southern part of the City of Westminster near Chelsea. Until 1870 it equated closely with the parish of Westminster St. George Hanover Square. In 1870 the Westminster St. Margaret Registration District was abolished and joined to St. George Hanover Square Registration District. All the separate registration districts within the City of Westminster were abolished in October 1933, joining together in the Westminster Registration District which had previously only covered the parish of Westminster St. James Piccadilly.

A map showing the civil parishes of Westminster as they appeared in 1870. Based on the Ordnance Survey Town Plan of London (1871-76) at 1:1056 scale.

The small liberties on the east are, in order from the top:

  • the Liberty of the Rolls (shown in grey)
  • St. Clement Danes (marked in pink with two detached portions:one above the others, the second the westermost of the small liberties)
  • St. Mary le Strand (marked in pink)
  • the Precinct of the Savoy (marked in pink)

The square between Westminster St. Margaret and Westminster St. John the Evangelist is the precinct of Westminster Abbey (the Close of the Collegiate Church of St Peter)
