Gertrude Frances Hern was born on 21 Aug 1885. She married Jesse Raymond Nelson on 25 Dec 1911, (the year Miriam was born,) in Dallas, Texas. She was always a particularly favorite aunt of Clara’s children because she would take them for ice cream and treats-They called her “Auntie Ray,” after her husband.. She and Ray had one son, Raymond, and adopted a second son, Ted. She was an avid gardener, and bred beautiful irises, before she fell and broke her hip. At that time the treatment was to simply put her in bed with sand bags on either side of her to stabilize the hip and wait till she either died, or it healed. It didn’t heal. She died in Dallas, Texas, and is buried in Calvary Hill Cemetery.
