A native of Germany, George Zulch was working as laborer in Detroit in the summer of 1862. He enlisted in company A on August 4, 1862 at Detroit. He was 34.
George mustered into federal service on August 13, 1862.
Although the State Adjutant General indicates that George Zulch was missing in action at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1863, he was in fact badly wounded. He suffered four separate wounds. A likely scenario is that in the immediate aftermath of the battle, the company sergeant was unable to locate him in one of the field hospitals. Perhaps he was unable to speak. Perhaps he was one of the first to be evacuated to a more permanent facility.
He returned to the Regiment on October 29, 1863. Field duty prove too much for him, however. On February 16, 1864 he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on account of wounds received in action.
George Zulch was discharged at Elmira, New York on November 14, 1865.
This unit was assigned to guard duty at the infamous Elmira Prison

I am also descended from the Raboldshausen Zulch's. I wrote to the minister of the local church and he sent me a great deal of information about our family. The earliest member was Johann Hermann who had a son Johann Lorenz (he married Anna Catharina Reismann in 1753. They had 9 children, Johann Hermann Friedrich, Johanna Margaretha, Johann Justus, Martha Elisabeth, Johann Herrmann, Anna Catharina, Catharina Christina, Johann Herrmann and Anna Margretha.

The eighth child, Johann Herrmann was married twice and had 10 children. His first wife was Anna Catharina Baumart and his second was Barbara Christina Heusner. The children were: Lorenz Friedrich (your ancestor), Johanna Margretha, Martha Elisabeth, Catharina Elisabeth, Jacob Zulch, Anna Katharina (my great great grandmother), Christina Zulch, Johann Ernst, Frederich, and Anna Catharina.

Lorenz Friedrich married Anna Catherina Schultz and they had 3 children: Georg, Friederich, and Catharina Elisabeth. I don't have any information about Georg other than his birthday, 10-14-1826. His brother Friederich had 10 children, and all I have about Catharina Elisabeth is her birthday, 5-15-1845.

All of my information is from church records in Raboldshausen.......which I would be happy to share with you. I sounds like you have additional information that I don't have, so we will both benefit.

  15.   Family notes per User:Rfelsing.

Georg Zuelch was born 14 Oct 1826 in Raboldshausen, Hesse-Kassel. The son of Lorenz Zuelch and Anna Catharina Schultz. (from church records in Raboldshausen, per Gene Roeder). In the United States he spelled his name George Zulch (without the umlaut) even though the proper translation from the German would have been Zuelch. (ü in German is equivalent to ue in English.)

In 1866 Hessen-Kassel was annexed to and became a part of Prussia. Today Raboldshausen (50.9166667° North, 9.5333333° East) is a part of the German state of Hesse.

George Zulch married Amelia Dimbere (b. 1834-1835 in Saxony) abt. 1855 (date based on the birth of their first child). We assume they were married in the United States, based on the fact that they were from geographically different parts of Germany. On one census entry, their first born child lists her birth state as Maryland, although she lists Michigan on other census records. Also, her parents listed her birth state as Michigan on the 1860 census while they lived in Detroit . Therefore we say that it is possible that they both immigrated to the United States by 1855, were married in Maryland and by 1860 had moved to Michigan.

On 4 Aug 1862 George Zulch of Detroit joined the 24th Michigan Infantry at Fort Wayne, Detroit, Michigan.

On 1 Jul 1863 George Zulch was present when Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. George Zulch's military records show that after the first day of the three day battle of Gettysburg, he was reported as killed in action. Fortunately for George and for his descendants, he was found 16 days later in a hospital in Little York, Pennsylvania with grievous, but not fatal, wounds. He was admitted under the name of George Celce, which combined with the chaos of that bloody battle may at least partially explain why the army thought he was dead.

He was released from the hospital on 24 Dec 1863, whereupon he was assigned to the Veterans Reserve Corps (VRC). The VRC is a place for combat unfit soldiers where they are assigned light duty. For example, guarding prisoners or public buildings, honor guard duty or anything they can do to free up able bodied men for the fighting. He was released from the service 14 Nov 1865 and returned home to 416 W Fort St, Detroit, Michigan.

His wounds included a rifle ball (bullet) which went completely through his right ankle. Another ball entered his left upper thigh and exited his left buttocks shattering his hip. He also had a forehead wound which was not serious enough to warrant anything on his disability pension, although he complained of severe, continuous headaches later in life.

By the 1870 census he was living in Portsmouth Township, Bay County, Michigan.

By 1880 George and his family had become Americanized. He, his wife and children appeared on the 1880 census with the last name of Seeley. Most documents after that used the name Seeley with some exceptions. His pension still came to George Zulch at 912 Webster St, Bay City. Although for most (but not all) years the Bay City city directory showed George Seeley living at that address. His children always appeared thereafter as Seeleys.

Amelia Seeley died 16 Oct 1889. She took extremely ill while cooking dinner and died shortly after the doctor arrived at her house on Webster St. She is buried at Pine Ridge in Bay City.

George Seeley remarried Jane (Janette) Chapman (b. 1832 in Ireland) on 9 Jul 1890. The name George Zulch was used on the marriage certificate. When Jane Chapman died on 2 Jun 1898 the death certificate listed her name as Mrs. George Seeley. They had no children together.

George Seeley died 11 Oct 1905. His death certificate and the cemetery records both show the Seeley name. He is buried in Elm Lawn in Bay City with his second wife. ...
