He probably came from one of the country parishes which surround the city. The name is common in the vicinity of English Bicknor, twenty-five miles north of Bristol. James Wathen, the shoemaker, who lived in the parish of St. John Baptist, Bristol contemporaneously with George1 Wathen, was baptized in the parish of English Bicknor on 20 August 1598, the son of John Wathen. He was apprenticed at Bristol on 27 October 1614. Nevertheless, no connection has been found between James and George, and no record of GeorgeA Wathen has been found in the parish registers of English Bicknor. Probate searches have also failed to identify the father of GeorgeA Wathen.
