  1. BIOGRAPHY.

George A. Thurston (1885 - 1964) graduated from Williams Grammar School, Chelsea, Massachusetts and from The Boston Free Evening Industrial Drawing School - three year program, George Hartnell Bartlett, Master. At age 17 he was employed as an artist at The Youth's Companion. He went on to study at the Eric Pape School and with George L. Noyes, prominent Boston Impressionist. At age 24 he moved to upstate New York, where he worked as an illustrator and established himself as a local fine artist. He was one of the founders of The Binghamton Museum of Fine Art, where he taught, adjudicated student art competitions, and exhibited his work. At age 57, he moved to Manhattan, NY. In 1942 - 43, during the Golden Age of Comics, he drew (penciler) and inked (inker) backgrounds at The Jack Binder Comic Studio. He continued to work as an illustrator, exhibited his paintings and taught. Throughout his life he attended and studied at Summer Artist's Colonies. George is listed in Who's Who in American Art - 1923, and in The Who's Who of American Comics Books - Vol. 4.

George worked in pencil, pen & ink, crayons, watercolors and oils, working in the tradition of American Impressionist Broken-Color Brush-Stroke Technique.

He signed his paintings using upper and lower case letters: G.A. Thurston, or in a few early paintings, G.Thurston. He did not use any other signature nor did he use all capital letters.
