Others in household are a different wife, Martha, age 46, two children Lenora and George, ages 17 and 15, respectively, a daughter, Mary Mahoney, and her daughter, Susan, age 7. (SFT) 1870 Federal Census shows George, age 50, and family living in Indian Creek Twshp. Pike Co., MO. Occupation noted as farmer. Others in household are wife, Elizabeth, age 48, son, Silas A., age 24, Mary E., age 15, Charles, age 20, Emily, age 13, James, age 10, Leonora, age 7, and George, age 5. Value of real estate listed as $1000, personal property, $427. (SFT) 1860 Federal Census shows George, age 40, and family living in Spencer Twshp., Pike Co., MO. Occupation noted as wagonmaker. Others in household are wife, Elizabeth, age 37, and six children age 1 mo. - 16 yrs. (SFT) 1850 Federal Census--at this date unable to locate George, age 30. (SFT) !BIRTHDATE: Calculated from gravestone in Haviland, KS. cemetery (died March 4, 1900, aged 80 yrs., 4 mos., 9 days). Great Grandson, Walter Dean Thorpe's wife (Lorraine) has George's baptismal certificate (LDS - Nov. 11, 1892) which gave his birthplace as Coningsby, Lincolnshire, England. (SFT) Review of George's correspondence in possession of Walter and Lorraine Thorpe indicates, in one letter dated 2/24/1890, residence as city of Farmer, Pike Co., Mo. Another dated 11/7/92 indicates residence as Wellsville, Mo. Business card indicates George as breeder of S.C. Buff Leghorns and White Holland Turkeys with residence of Ashley, Mo. One letter refers to Martha (George's wife ?). . . and an S.A. Orr. Vandalia, Audrain Co., Mo. (SFT) A photograph of George (approx. age, 80) is in file. (SFT) Obituary from Kiowa County Independent--March 9, 1900 "Grandpa Thorpe, father of S.A. Thorpe and Mrs. Orr died Sunday in his 81st year. He had but recently come to Kansas, yet he had made friends of all with whom he came in contact. He was for many years a Methodist minister, but recently joined the Latter Day Saints. Funeral was held in Schoolhouse Monday, body laid in Friend's Cemetery." The Mrs. Orr is Lenora Thorpe, daughter of Grandpa (George) and wife of Samuel Orr who moved from Missouri to Haviland around this time. (SFT) Research Notes from genealogist Suzanne L.
