While still living at Lebanaon, IN, he enlisted in the Union Army at the age of 16 and served for six months and was sent home. He remained home for six months and again volunteered in the spring of 1865 and served for one year in the 150th Illinois Infantry. Most of the time was spent at Atlanta, nashville and Griffin were he was on Provo duty.
