Nov 13, 1889 - Mr George Rudge has just turned out a fine monument for Chief Shakes - it has a heavy square base, upon which a life-sized bear sits holding up a polished marble column, at the top of which another little bear sits.
  7. RUDGE, GEORGE,(Victoria), was born on the 7th of April, at St. Stephen's, New Brunswick, where his father, William Rudge was engaged in the marble business. Mr. Rudge was educated at his native place and at the age of fifteen years went to work in his father's business. In 1875 he left New brunswick and went to San Franscico. After a brief stay there he came to British Columbia and resided for a time in New Westminster. He then went to seattle where he formed a partnership with Mr. J. Carkeek, and carried on a marble business for three years, when their establishment was burned and their property totally destroyed. He returned to British columbia and settled in Vistoria, where he established the business that he conducts at present and which is largest of its kind in Victoria. he also has a branch establishment in Nanaimo, and until recently had one in New westminster.
