- 1900 Federal Census: George W. 28, a Hotel Cook born in Canada, immigrated to the US in 1892 (7 years) and lived on Deer Street, 3rd Ward of Dunkirk, Chautauqua County, New York in a rented house with his wife Mary 24, a Housekeeper born in Ireland, immigrated to US in 1887 (13 years)(Q: Canada) and their son George 2, born in New York. They had been married for three years. Also a resident in the household was his father George Reid 54, a Carriage Maker born in Canada, immigrated to US in 1899 and widowed (?). - Obituary in a Buffalo newspaper: Dining Car Chef Killed G. W. Reid Was Jolted Off the Platform at Batavia The body of G. W. Reid of Buffalo was found near Bergen with the head almost severed and the left arm badly damaged. Reid was the chef on dining car No. 409 and while standing on the platform of his car which passed Batavia at 10:45 o'clock last night fell under. Reid was not missed until conductor W. T. Lynest was looking after his crew on entering the Buffalo Station. A thorough search of the train was made and then word was sent back along the line. The body was found as stated. A bottle of mouth wash was found in Reid's hand and, it is supposed he stepped upon the platform with the purpose of rinsing his mouth and was thrown by a jolt of the train. An investigation is being made by the Genesee Co coroner, and the body will be brought home for burial today. Reid lived with his wife and child at 454 Seneca St. He had been in the dining car service of the Central for about six months. Previous to that he was a cook at the Continental Hotel He was 28 years old. - Per letter to Mary from George Washington's brother James Walker Reid dated November 7, 1900: George was suffering with sore gums and Mary had made up a special concoction for him to use. |
