George was born in Birmingham "in a house located at the present site of the La Granda Hotel at the corner of Twenty-third Street and Fourth Avenue, North." He attended the Bingham Military School in Asheville, then University of Virginia before being appointed a cadet at West Point in 1902 at the age of 19. After graduation, he was assigned to the Field Artillery, and then became a mathematics instructor at West Point. While at West Point, he married Christine Finn, whose family was from Boston, and started a family.
In 1913, he resigned and they moved back to Birmingham, where he worked for the president of the Birmingham Machine & Foundary Company, soon becoming president himself. During World War I, he served as a lieutenant colonel with the 56th Field Artillery.[1]
