Facts and Events
The following description is copied from notes on the Mitchell Family gleaned from "Uncle Ed's Diary" in April 1882: "George T. Mitchell called to see us after an absence of 30 years. He looked hale and hearty, slightly gray, about five feet six tall, fair complexion and dark eyes. He commenced with the war and went as a quartermaster. To the end he did not receive any severe wounds in the battlefields that he did carry many a wounded soldier from." Presumably it was this George Mitchell who was also quartermaster of the 79th (New York Highland) Regiment and Chief of the New York Caledonian Club in 1865, 1866, and 1870. I don't remember my great grandmother ever speaking of her father's participation in the Civil War and have been unable to find any record of his service myself. She described him as a "gentleman" who had no particular occupation. |
