!2 DETROIT MEN DIE IN CANAL - Car Crashes Into Water 10 Feet Deep Two Detroit men lost their lives Wednesday night when the car in which they were riding left the pavement at a curve and crashed into a canal near Grand Rapids, O. The water was 10 feet deep in the canal. The dead are Huvon Meeks, 24 years old, 676 Willis Ave. West, and Wayne Schick, 22, of 94 Watson St. They were on their way to Kokomo, In., where their parents reside. The accident occurred at 10 P.M. on the highway between Toledo and Napoleon, O., 22 miles S.W. of Toledo and across the Maumee River from Grand Rapids. The old Ohio & Erie Canal, no longer in operation- is almost dry but has been filled by recent floods. There were no witnesses of the accident. Residents in the neighborhood heard the crash. Drivers recovered the bodies and pulmotors were used without success. Meeks was employed by the New York Central Railroad and also occasion- ally played a saxophone in dance orchestras. His only Detroit relative is a sister, Mrs. Arline Wilshusen, 13263 Washburn Ave. Schick was em- ployeed as a pianist in dance orchestras.
