George William Alfred Medhurst was born in 1861 at Charminster in Dorset, illegitimate son of Emma Medhurst, also known as Emma Hammond, having been illegitimate herself. Emma claimed on George's birth to be married to a musician named George William Hammond, but this appears to be a fiction. However, it is worth noting that many years later Emma did marry (as her second husband) a musician named George William Jones, whom she had probably known from childhood as he spent part of his childhood growing up in Weymouth, where Emma grew up. It therefore seems very likely that George William Jones was George William Alfred Medhurst's father.
Young George appears in the 1861 census living with his mother in Dorchester.
Sadly George died on 25th January 1863 from inflammation of the lungs and pleura. He was not yet two year old. He was buried in Poole on 30th January 1863.
