REGISTRATION DISTRICT Weymouth | 1881 BIRTH in the Sub-district of Weymouth in the County of Dorset | No. | When and where born | Name, if any | Sex | Name and surname of father | Name, surname and maiden name of mother | Occupation of father | Signature, description and residence of informant | When registered | Signature of registrar | 184 | Fifteenth March 1881 1 Helen Lane Melcombe Regis U.S.D. | George William Jones | Boy | Robert George Henry De'La'Porte | Emma De'La'Porte formerly Medhurst | Musician | Emma de La Porte Mother 1 Helen Lane Melcombe Regis | Twenty second April 1881 | Jno Lee Registrar |
Whilst this birth certificate gives George's father as Robert De la Porte, who was Emma's husband at the time, other evidence suggests this may not have been the case: Emma and Robert were living apart at the time of the 1881 census, just a few days after George's birth. George's forename is given as 'George William Jones'. Emma went on to marry George William Paris Jones in 1883, just eleven weeks after Robert De la Porte's death - a remarkable short gap. George William Paris Jones has not been found in the 1881 census, but he had been living in Weymouth in 1871, showing he was also connected to the area. The child whose birth certificate suggests his name should have been George William Jones DE LA PORTE instead was known as George William JONES for the rest of his life.
