Notes
- Note: the parentage of George McNeely that married Sarah Rutledge is disputed. Some researchers believe he was a son of David McNeely (1720-1800). Other researchers have David placed as a son of Robert McNeely and Dorothea, which is supported by the citation listed below, but the fact that Robert McNeely did not name his son George McNeely in his will in 1757 appears to indicate that his son George had likely died prior to that date:
- The will of Robert McNeely, written during his last illness, was probated on the 12th of May 1757, leaving his estate of 400 acres to his heirs listed as "eldest son" James, Michael, and William and daughters Mary, Jean, and Dorthea, and his pregnant wife Dorthea. There is no mention of George McNeely, a twin brother of William, who was baptised June 20, 1743 at Michael Woods home in Albemarle County, Virginia.
