George McGill enlisted in Company A of the 9th Ohio Cavalry Regiment on 07 Sep 1862. Mustered out on 20 May 1865 at Lexington, NC.
This regiment was organized in 1863, to serve three years.
The Regiment was identified with Gen. Sherman's cavalry division on the “March to the Sea.”, in which skirmishing continued more or less until the general engagement took place at Waynesboro, in which the regiment made the second charge and broke the Confederate lines.
