Captain of Third PA, Regt.

George served in Rev War under General Washington and was an intimate friend of the great commander. He was one of the original members of the Society of Cincinnati, a man of courage and high principle. After the treaty of peace with Great Britain, he was sent in command of a detachment of soldiers to Ft. duquesne to protect the settlers again the attack of Indians. Afterwards he was appointed assistant commissary-general and intrusted with the duty of establishing Ft. Washington (now Cincinnati). While in the performance of his duties he was attacked with fever at the fort and died there, 24 Nov 1793 @41Y.

Washington (Cincinnati); widow applied 11 Sept 1837 Pittsburgh and living w/son-in-law Boyle Irwin, soldier and widow had one ch Eliza who m Boyle Irwin 21 Apr 1803 @17Y, Pittsburgh and Boyle came to Am 1798

George McCully served as Ensign and Cpt of 3rd PA Regt; also listed for that was Robert McCully also George McCully served as pvt 5th PA Regt and also listed for that was a James and a Samuel McCully George McCully is one of the PA 3rd Bat under Col Joseph Woods; he was on a list to join the group on 15 May 1777 PA Evening Post from V2 PA Vital Records, Genealogical Publishing Co, 1983; some on that list were considered deserters.

Burial info says he died 15 Nov 1790, a date from letter from George to his wife Ann, concerning his impending death which is in the Hawkins Letters, Archives of Trinity Cathedral. Their dau Eliza (Mrs. Boyle Irwin, is buried in Trinity. There is no listing for either her or Boyle; also George's death date conflicts with other data.

General Ephraim Douglass was given a commission by US War Office to inform Indians that the Revolutionary War was over and US had won. He was to go as far as Detroit if necessary with the news. He chose one companion, Cpt George McCully and one servant and proceeded to carry out his mission. Princeton, 18 Aug 1783 letter of acceptance.

He left 7 June from Ft. Pitt and traveled 200 miles by the old trading path, arriving on the 16th of July at the Delaware and Huron settlements on the Sandusky River. He left Sandusky on the 30th and traveled towards Detroit until the afternoon of 1st of July. He arrived in Detroit on the 4th July. He finally had meeting w/Indian tribes on 6th July, they being chiefs of 11 Indian tribes. He left 7th July he departed for Ft. Pitt.

Between David Gilliland and Jacob Zimmerman, exec of last will of Thomas Gibson, late of Pitt Twp, dec and George McCully of Pitt Twp, Esq. 201 pounds 314 acres (a very long description) received of Thomas Gibson 13 June 1769 Tract #3392 surveyed by warrant 21 Mar 1786 Gibson made will on 15 Nov 1791 ordering this land to be sold McCully paid on 2 May 1793; witnessed by John Feree and Samuel jones before Jno Wilkins, JP

He was successively ensign, lieutenant, captain, in 2nd and 3rd PA Regts; he retired on 17 Jan 1782 and was on half pay until his death (24 Nov 1792).

George McCully Revolutionary War Soldier (no dates). Estate advertised with Ann McCully, admrx (1 Feb 1799); a Mason. died 15 Nov 1790. (A copy of a letter from George McCully to his wife Ann concerning his impending death is in Hawkins Letters, Archives of Trinity Cathedral). their daughter Eliza married Boyle Irwin who is buried at Trinity.

On p751 of Cramer's History of Wheeling: bio of Howard Campbell Richards, prominent young attorney who served one term as sheriff of Ohio Co, WVA; b 19 Oct 1863, Wheeling, s/o Henry Smith Richards and Mary Campbell. He was single and prominent in Revolutionary circles as he was gggrson Cpt Nathaniel Irish ggrson Cpt Thomas Wylie ggnewphew of Major McColloch and Cpt Henry Smith, all officers of PA's Continental Army, member of SAR and of Fort Henry Club.

 This Indenture made the eighteenth day of April in the year of our Lord on
 thousand seven hundred and ninety three. Between David Gilliland and Jacob
 Zimmerman Executors  of the last will and testament of Thomas Gibson, late of
 Pitt Township in the County of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania deceased of
 the one part, and George McCully of the same place, Esquire, of the other
 part. Witnesseth that the said David Gilliland and Jacob Zimmerman for and
 consideration of the sum of two hundred and one pounds lawful money of
 Pennsylvania - to them in hand well and truly paid by the said George
 McCully at and before the sealing and delivery hereof, the receipt whereof is
 hereby acknowledged have and each of them hath granted, bargained, sold,
 release and confirmed, and by these presents do and each of them doth grant,
 bargain, sell, release and confirm unto the said George McCully his heirs and
 assigns a certain tract of land situate in Pitt Township in the County and
 State aforesaid, Bounded and described by the lines viz.: Beginning at a post
 on the bank of the Monongahela River thence up the same North seventy-three
 degrees East one hundred and twenty four perches and North eighty degrees
 East seventy-two perches: and East sixty-seven  perches to a Sugar tree;
 thence by land of John McDowell Esquire North thirty-five degrees East
 sixteen perches and a half to a post; and North seventy-four degrees East
 forty-two perches to a Black Oak; and East thirty-three perches and a half
 perch to a black Oak, thence South seventy-six degrees East one hundred and
 thirty-five perches to a Lynn; thence by land of Abdill McClure land North
 twenty-five and a half degrees West one hundred and forty-six perches to a
 post thence by land of John Ferry South sixty degrees West one hundred and
 twenty-five perches to a dogwood, & South thirty degrees West thirty-three
 perches and a half to a Walnut; and South eighty four degrees West fifty-six
 perches to a post; North forty-four perches to a White Oak; and North sixty
 degrees West sixty-seven to a post; and North twenty perches to a White Oak;
 and North eighty degrees West thirty perches to a Hickory; North eight West
 sixty-nine perches to a Hickory; South fifty-three West seventeen perches to
 a Walnut; south seventy-three West thirty-five perches to a White Oak; thence
 by land of James Fleming South thirty degrees West sixty-four perches to a
 Stump; and South sixty degrees West seventy-nine perches to a Hickory; South
 thirty degrees West twenty-eight to an Ash; South fifty degrees West
 seventy-two perches to a White Oak; thence by the contractors land; South
 twenty degrees East twenty-seven perches to a White Oak; and Sout sixty-five
 degrees East eighty-four perches to the place of beginning, Containing three
 hundred and fourteen acres and the allowance of six pcent for roads &c. It
 being the same tract of land granted to said Thomas Gibson, deceased, by an
 application dated the thirteenth day of June one thousand seven hundred and
 sixty nine No 3392 and surveyed by virtue of a warrant dated the 21st day of
 March one thousand seven hundred and eighty six. And the said Thomas  Gibson
 being seized and possessed of the aforesaid tract of land, died, he having
 first made his last will and testament in writing dated the fifteenth day of
 November one thousand seven hundred and ninety-one wherein he ordered the
 said David Gilliland and Jacob Zimmerman his executors to dispose of the said
 tract of land and make a conveyance for the same to the purchaser, relation
 thereunto being had may more fully & at large appear. together with all and
 singular the buildings thereon erected and being ways, woods, waters, water
 courses, right, privileges, hereditaments and appurtenances whatsoever
 thereunto belonging or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold the said
 tract of land with the appurtenances unto the said George McCully his heirs
 and assigns. To the only proper use and behoof of the said George McCully his
 heirs and assigns forever. Under and subject to the purchase money and
 interest due and to become  due and payable for the same to the Commonwealth
 of Pennsylvania. In witness whereof the said David Gilliland and Jacob
 Zimmerman have hereunto set their hands and seals the

Allegheny County, Ss. The second day of May A.Domini 1793 before me John Wilkins Esq. one of the Commonwealths Justices assigned to keep the peace in and for the said County came Samuel Jones and on his solemn affirmation, says that he did see David Gilliland & Jacob Zimmerman the above grantors sign, seal and deliver the within Indenture as their act and deed and desired the same might be recorded as such and that he did also see John Feree subscribe his name thereto as a Witness to the execution therof and that the Sam'l Jones thereto subscribed as a witness to the execution thereof is of his own handwriting. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day & year above written.
