  2.   As I remember it, my family must have made a trip to Hammond and Calumet City almost once a month. Some of the first memories must have been of visits to my grandparents, but all of the vivid memories are of the Davidson's house in Hammond, and the McCarthy's house in Calumet City. These were the required stops.
The house in Calumet City was a lively place, with four boy cousins. It was also the home of my grandma, after grandpa Frank died. I don't remember much about George McCarthy. I think he was often busy with his political career, and he died when I was ten. But the house was the real center of the Zeller family. Besides the presence of grandma, this was the place where Father John and Sister Theresa Lucille held court when they were in town. There was never a sign that there was a struggle to maintain the home, though I realize now that it must have been hard. Aunt Mary had a job, I have heard, as the secretary at St. Joseph church; and I think that George's brothers looked out for her. All in all, I remember a spotless house that I thought had wonderful furniture. And I remember that there was never any question who ran the family.
