Sketch of Life of George Albert Keys Aug 1927
Delong, Ill. Aug 6 (Special) George Albert Keys, son of John M. and Sarah (Lowman) Keys, was born May 9, 1849 in Maquon township. He was one of a family of six children. He departed this life at the age of 78 years, 2 months and 23 days at his home in Delong.
He grew to manhood in the vicinity of his birthplace, and received his education in what is known as Bennington school. On March 27, 1879, he was united in marriage to Katherine Davis and to this union five children were born. Those living are: Mrs. Harry Bragg, Mrs. Ralph Hartman and Charles D. Keys, his wife and two children, Willie and Frankie, having preceded him indeath.
He also leaves to moun his passing seven grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Mary Cowman of Long Beach, Calif; one brother W. D. Keys of Chanute, Kan., a number of other relatives and a host of friends. He was a veteran member of the Maquon lodges; I.O.O. F. and Knights of Pythias.
Funeral services were held at the Haynes chapel, north of DeLong, on Thursday afternoon, with Rev. Elmer Olsen of Knoxville officiating. The songs were beautifully rendered by Mrs. Charles Ingram. Pallbearers were Joe Wainwright, Will Snyder, Frank Hopkins, Ed Cramer, John Peck and Delbert Gillum. The floral offerings were many and beautiful. The body was laid to rest in the Maquon cemetery.
As you drive into Maquon from Knoxville, take the first road to the left just before you enter the town. Follow the road to the left and then it curves right and the cemetery will be just a short way on the left. Turn on the next to the last road and they Keys monument is visable from the road. Behind the monument are 3 separate stones, one for Frank Lyle Keys 1897-1898, one for father George A. Keys 1849-1927 and the third for Mother Sarah k Keys 1858-1923. To the right of the large monument is the stone for Willie Keys.
According to Kenneth Hartman,(2001) the original Keys home still stands in Delong. It was near the railroad tracks and across from the cattle yard. Grandmother Keys used a wheel chair and GA Keys put in one of the first indoor toilets in Knox County. Grandpa Keys loved to play cards and he died at livery stable of a heart attack while playing one last game. He was living at that time with Hattie and Harry.
