He was one of the pioneer settlers of Vermont, first of Castleton, afterwards at Bennington. He was of the party of Green Mountain Boys who applied the beach seal to the settlement of Yorkers at Vergennes, and stood by the side of Col. Ethan Allen when, on the 10th of May 1775, he demanded the surrender of Ticonderoga in the name of the Continental Congress. A humble but devoted Christian from his youth up, he was permitted to close a life of endeavored obedience to his Divine Master in the enjoyment of the precious consolations of the faith he professed.
