MICHIGAN PLACE NAMES Bell Oak, Ingham County: first settled by James L. Nichols in 1842, but the actural village was due to George Fisher Jr., who, with his brother in law, Truman Spence, built a sawmill here about 1855; the bell in the solid oak school gave it the name Bell Oak School, and the village took the name Bell Oak, The names Bell Oak and Locke ( many settlers came here from Locke Twp., Cayuga County, N.Y.) were used interchangeably for years,but now it is Bell Oak; it's post office, named Locke was opened on Oct. 30, 1861. |
