Social News, Reading Eagle, Friday Dec 7 1888, George Corbit 623 Canal St, celebrated his 54th birthday anniversary andin honor of the event entertained a number of friends. An excellentsupper was served, games were played and music was enjoyed. Those presentwere:

The funeral took place at his residence, 607 South Fifth St, Reading onSaturday at 1:30PM. Services were held at Imannuel Evangelical ChurchSouth Sixth St Interment at Charles Evan's Cemetary, Reading, PA

He came to Reading about forty five years before his death. [This iserroneous as the 1850 census puts him in Reading at the time of thecensus and had him listed as 16 years of age. The census shows Geo Corbitliving in the NW Wards of Reading PA. age 16 and working as a hostler.LOT 432 Roll 752 Page of census 244 Line 15 Enumeration Date 12/8/1850.]

He was a boat builder by trade, and worked building canal boats forWilliiam Heister. He also worked for the Reading Hardware Works forawhile and then for the Reading Iron Works for eight years. At the timeof his death, he was working for Eckhardt's Furnace.

He served in the Civil War, with Co B, Fourth Penn's Reserves, from May25th 1861 to June 17th 1864. A description of him taken from hisdischarge at his entry into service gives his height as 5ft 7in, darkcomplexion, dark eyes and hair, age 27. He applied for an invalidspension May 7th 1891. The application # was 1013726 and the certificatewas 829335. Sarah applied for a widow's pension on Feb 23 1898 # 6670960and certificate # 462117

On July 22, 1868 Land on the Schuykill River was conveyed to George andhis wife by Thomas McCombs the father in law of Lewis H Corbit. Thissame property was conveyed by the Corbits to Florence A. Speirs on Sep 121871. Described as follows: All that certain frame house one and onehalfstory high and lot or piece of ground on which the same is erected,situate between the Schuykill River and the Schuykill Canall(sic) in theCity of Reading bounded on the northward by property of John Wolfinger,East and West by property now belonging to the Schuykill Navigation Co.and westerly by the Schuykill river aforesaid, containing in front onsaid Schuykill River thirtyone feet six inches and in depth to saidSchuykill Canal One hundred and two feet It being part of the samepremises which Lewis Reese of the City of reading by indenture bearingthe date the 30th day of march AD 1839. for the consideration thereinmentioned did grant and confirm unto Thomas McCombs in fee which deed isrecorded in Deed Book A vol 90 Page 524.

        George served as councilman from Ward 1 for the period 1874-1878and as School Controller 1877-1879
