Uncertain Lineage

Many, but not all, online trees say he was the son of Joshua Collins and Elizabeth Dale, while others suggest different parents. However:

  • Joshua and Elizabeth weren't married until 1826
  • Joshua and Elizabeth had only one son (William) in the 1830 census

In the 1840 census, there were 5 males under the age of 20 in Joshua's household, presumably their sons William (age 10-14), Elijah and Elisha (aged 5-9), and Allen (under the age of 5), and another male aged 15-19. This last male could have been George, but he wasn't likely their son, since he wasn't in the 1830 census. He might have been a nephew or brother. Or the male aged 15-19 might have been a farmhand who was a different person altogether.
