    ... Polly G. married George S. Brownell, of Situate, R. I.; she, also, died, May 3, 1853, leaving three children—Mary, Susan and George Hiel. The father volunteered into the 63d regiment, O. V. I., in the war of the rebellion, and—as. a first lieutenant—was one who led the night attack on Fort Wagner, near Charlestown, S. C., on July 18, 1863, in which attack he was killed by a shot in the breast. ...

    OCCUPATION: George is listed as a saddler, but had probably worked earlier in the tannery with his father.

    MILITARY: The widower George S BROWNELL volunteered into the 62nd Regiment of OVI in the Civil War, as a 2nd Lieutenant on 8/14/1862. On the "Return" of that Regiment for month of July 1863 he is reported "killed in action at Morris Island, South Carolina, 7/18/1863. He was one who led the night attack on Fort Wagner, near Charlestown, SC 7/18/1863," in which attack he was killed by a shot in the breast.

    On 7/21/1864, Miss Sarah Jane Brownell (Aged 32 years), sister of George Seyler Brownell declared that she is the guardian of the three minor children of George who was killed in battle 7/18/1863 at the storming and assault made on Fort Wagner by the Federal Troops in the state of South Carolina,
