WILL/PROBATE: He made his will in March 1834. Proven at Durham on 15 November 1836; his estate was sworn as under £5000.

EDUCATION: 1792-1794 Ackworth School, Ackworth, Yorkshire, England.

OCCUPATION: 1807 onwards, is recorded as a draper. 1817 - for some period prior to this date, acted as clerk and cashier to Sunderland preparative meeting. 1827 - descrived as a linen and woollen draper, of 176 High Street, Sunderland.

RESIDENCES: 1781 - At birth - Crawshawbooth, Lancashire, England. Murton Street, Bishopwearmouth, Co. Durham, England.

MISCELLANEOUS_NOTES: As the official history of the store reports, his strict Quaker upbringing was a big influence, and he soon earned a reputation for quality merchandise and integrity in every transaction.
