Facts and Events
Garrett was killed on 25 Dec. 1867. At that time, train cars were chain-coupled to each other with bumpers between them; he was caught between two cars when the bumpers gave way while he was coupling them and he died of the resulting injuries. He was buried in the old St. Thomas cemetery. Ellen sold their property a year later in December 1868, and appears to have moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, perhaps because of an impending birth of what seems to have been an illegitimate son, Thomas Robert Barry. Tom was born in Indianapolis, probably in 1869. As the story goes, Ellen left Zanesville with two of the children, Mary and Ella, leaving John William and Anna in the care of her sisters Mary Kennedy Shea ("Aunt Nannie") and Bridget Kennedy Burns ("Aunt Mame") who raised them. From about 1875 on, Ellen Barry lived in Columbus, Ohio. She was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Columbus. References
