A note on the birth year:
The 1900, 1910, and 1930 censuses suggest a date of birth of about 1865. However, the 1870, 1880, and 1920 censuses suggests a date of about 1862. Also, a Zanesville Signal article from March of 1950 notes that he is 87, which, assuming a November birthday (per the 1900 census) suggests a birth year of 1862. Another article from February 1946 mentions celebrating his 83rd birthday recently, also suggesting a birth year of 1862. Finally, a family history compiled by John Barry suggested 1862 as well. Therefore, and based on the best available evidence, this record will utilize a birth year of 1862.
